Field Interviewers, Leeds/Wakefield Permanent/Part Time, £17,250(PRO RATA), Home Based
Currently have a number of Field Interviewer positions across England. The opportunity is permanent with part time hours and you will be home based.
This includes, amongst other things, receiving work by modem to a laptop computer, receiving and studying survey materials, receiving stationery requirements, preparing maps and proposed calling plans. Addresses will be grouped into 'quotas' - the size of the quota varying according to the survey type. You will have a set amount of time to complete the work, which is why planning is so important.
Based on your planning and any previous visits, you will have to determine the best times to call (this can be from early in the morning until late at night) depending on when you are most likely to find people at home. You will usually work within a reasonable daily travelling distance of your home address. However, if you live in a rural area or want extra work you could find yourself travelling further and staying away from home overnight.
An advance letter will be sent approximately 2 weeks before an Interviewer is due to visit to notify the household that they have been randomly selected and will advise them that an interviewer will call. This letter forms the basis for your contact with the addresses. We select addresses rather than individuals, therefore until you make contact by calling in person, we will not know who lives there.
Your first call, when you make contact, will determine who you need to speak to (some surveys ask you to select one individual; on others we will interview all people aged 16 and over). You are likely to have to make repeated visits to addresses, either to make appointments and/or to keep trying to find people in or to persuade them to co-operate.
This is carried out in respondents' homes. You will give full introductions about yourself, the client and the survey. All our interviews are conducted using a laptop computer and are structured with very precise instructions - questions have to be read exactly as written. Some questionnaires may require you to be able to record verbatim what respondents say, others will require coding of answers. The subject matter of our surveys often require questions of a personal nature, including relationships within the household, personal finances, health, contraception, employment and many other family matters. Interviews range from about 20 minutes up to 2 hours, depending on the survey.
This is a major and very important part of an Interviewer's role. No matter how good the data is that you collect during an interview if you are not able to complete the administrative tasks associated with this activity then the data can be totally compromised. This activity includes ensuring all time and expenses incurred are accurately recorded using correct codes, providing reports on progress to your Field Manager, sending letters to respondents, completing coding on data you have collected, completing pay claims and regularly transmitting data back to the office via your laptop modem.
Regular checks will be completed on all interviewers' work which will include contacting respondents to check results.
To be successful for the role you will need to undergo basic security check, have a full driving licence and access to a car, have good demonstrable experience using a laptop, Wi-Fi at home and be able to work flexible hours.
